Prayer and Wish Keepers are based on an ancient tradition that has its roots in many cultures throughout the world. These vessels are used in a variety of ways. As keepers for prayers or memories by writing your wish or prayer on a scroll and placing it inside where to manifest itself in your life or communicate itself to whomever the prayer was intended for.
This bird was handmade by me and went through many different stages to get it as smooth and shiny as possible. After forming the bird and placing a heart shaped hole in its breast, it was sanded multiple times before it was bisque fired. Then metallic salts and natural materials were applied before wrapping it in aluminum foil and pit firing it to leave a stunning patina upon the surface. The final step is to clean it and apply a non yellowing wax as a protective coat and to enhance the natural shine.
Because there is no hard layer of glaze covering the piece there is nothing hiding the clay from view. They feel warm and almost soft to the touch giving them a sensuous and luxurious feeling that encourages you to pick them up and hold them.
